On 14 January 2024, Queen Margrethe 2 of Denmark abdicates. It is exactly 52 years after she was installed and thus succeeded her father, King Frederik 9. Margrethe was born at Amalienborg on 16 April 1940. She was not heir to the throne at birth, but became so in 1953, when the new Succession to the Throne Act made it possible for female succession.
