George Washington (1732-1799) was an American plantation owner, general and the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Washington worked as a surveyor in Virginia and in 1753 became the leader of a military expedition to secure Ohio against French invasion. In 1759 he married Martha Custis, née Dandrige (1731-1802), a wealthy widow, and became a prominent figure in Virginia’s political life. Todays stamp depicting George Washington is from 1861.
