The third stamp from the United States that did not show a president was issued on April 1 in 1869. It shows an eagle and a shield. President John F. Kennedy wrote to the Audubon Society: “The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America”. Todays stamp is a ten cent stamp showing the bald eagle and a shield. The stamp is with grill. A grill on a postage stamp is an embossed pattern of small indentations intended to discourage postage stamp reuse. On this stamp you can actually see the grill above the eagle. The catalog value of the stamp is approx. 1.000 $.
